Studio or Outdoor Family Photos: Which Is Right for Your Family?

One of the questions I'm often asked by parents is:

"Should we choose a studio family photoshoot or an outdoor session?"

The answer is simple...

There isn't a right or wrong choice.

Both styles create beautiful memories that you'll treasure for years to come. The best option simply depends on your family's personality, your children's ages and the type of photographs you'd love to display in your home.

As a family photographer based in my Sidcup studio, I photograph families across Bexley, Sidcup, Welling, Eltham, Chislehurst, Bromley, Greenwich and the surrounding South East London area.

Whether we're creating timeless portraits in the studio or exploring one of the beautiful local parks, my goal is always the same—to capture natural, genuine moments that tell your family's story.

Studio Family Photography

If you love timeless portraits that will never go out of style, a studio family session could be the perfect choice.

Using a simple, neutral backdrop, the focus stays entirely on your family and the connections you share.

The studio provides a warm, calm and comfortable environment where you don't need to worry about the weather, making it an excellent option all year round.

Because everything is carefully prepared before you arrive, you can simply relax and enjoy spending time together.

A studio family session may be perfect if you:

  • Love timeless, elegant portraits.
  • Prefer a simple and uncluttered style.
  • Want a weatherproof location.
  • Have younger children who settle well indoors.
  • Would like photographs that look beautiful in any home.

Outdoor Family Photography

Outdoor family sessions have a completely different feel.

They're relaxed, playful and full of natural interactions.

Children love having the freedom to explore, run, laugh and simply be themselves, creating genuine smiles and authentic moments that can't be posed.

Whether we're walking through woodland, enjoying one of the beautiful parks around Bexley or making the most of a warm summer evening, outdoor sessions tell your family's story in a wonderfully natural way.

Every season offers something unique, from blossom in spring to golden leaves in autumn.

An outdoor family session may be perfect if you:

  • Love natural surroundings.
  • Enjoy relaxed, candid photographs.
  • Have children who love being outdoors.
  • Want beautiful seasonal colours in your images.
  • Prefer a documentary-style feel.

Which Style Feels Most Like Your Family?

Rather than asking which option is better, ask yourself:

"Where do we feel most relaxed together?"

If you imagine cosy cuddles, beautiful portraits and a timeless style, a studio session could be exactly what you're looking for.

If you picture your children laughing, exploring and enjoying time together outdoors, an outdoor session may suit your family perfectly.

Neither option is better than the other.

They're simply two beautiful ways of capturing your family's memories.

Every Family Session Is Relaxed

Whether you choose a studio or outdoor family session, one thing always stays the same.

My sessions are relaxed, child-led and centred around genuine moments rather than perfect poses.

There is no pressure for children to sit perfectly still or smile at the camera.

Instead, I gently guide the session while allowing plenty of time for cuddles, games, laughter and those little in-between moments that often become your favourite photographs.
