When booking a newborn photographer there are many things you want to think about, it's not always just about the price, you want to have a great experience as well. Booking the closest photographer to you just because it's more convenient or cheaper does't mean it's the best decision. Make sure you do a lot of research and love the photos on that photographers website. I think it's so important the way the photos make you feel and how you connect with them. How much a newborn photographer cost will also depend on that individual photographers circumstances, some photographers may have more business overheads than overs that they have to factor into their newborn photography prices.

How much experience does the photographer have?

A newborn photographer with years of experience will charge more than a newborn photographer who is just starting out. It's a hard business to start out in and it can take some time to build a newborn photography business up. Practice makes perfect, well not perfect, no one's perfect but with every newborn session you learn something new and how to become better within your field and have more confidence. It takes years of practice and persistence to perfect your newborn workflow and knowing how best to photograph newborns. The safety of your newborn is always my top priority, I have over 10 years experience and when i started out I attended many newborn photography workshops that covered the safety of newborns when photographing them in different poses.

When looking for an experienced newborn photographer you should be able to see an extensive portfolio of beautiful photos. The photographers work should show you their value regarding to the price they are charging and they should be worth every penny. Also make sure you look up reviews from that photographer, other peoples past experiences are the best way to see what experience you may get from that photographer. Do you choose a newborn home or studio session?

Are you looking for a newborn session in a studio or do you want someone to come to your home? Newborn photography pricing can vary depending on the type of session you would like. Some newborn photographers may charge more if they have a rented studio as this can be a large overhead for them. Newborn sessions that take place in a studio are often a mixture of posed photos with props and then more natural newborn photos without props. A home newborn session tends to be more of a lifestyle session with natural light without props. Have a think about what style you prefer or if you would like a mixture of both. Some newborn photographers will also charge more for a home session as it takes more time for them than photographing in their studio.

The Quality of the prints and products

If you are looking to include photography prints and products within your newborn package, find out what your photographer offers. Newborn photography pricing will increase when these are factored in. Most of the time you will be able to add these on as an extra on top of a standard package but if you are wanting to include products within your newborn package it's best to find out the full pricing beforehand so you are not hit with a big cost you wasn't expecting. Beautiful luxury prints, frames and albums will always add an extra cost onto your newborn package as they are premium products that add such value to your newborn photos!

The time that is spent on a newborn photoshoot from start to finish

A lot of people don't realise the amount of work that goes into one newborn session. If you add the hours all together that is involved in one session, they are not getting paid as much for their time as you might think.

• Emails with the client, booking them in and further communications with clients regarding their session information - 1 hour
• A newborn session...... 3 - 4 hours (it sometimes has been 5 hours)
• Uploading the photos from the session and backing them up.....1 hour
• Culling the photos for editing can take up to 1-2 hours
• The editing process around 4 hours
• Uploading final edited galleries and emailing clients , up to an hour 1 hour

There are a lot of overheads as a newborn photographer and for photographers in general. I sometimes forget about the amount of overheads I have but it comes with the job so that's ok but here is a little insight into what most photographers also have to pay for on a monthly basis.

• Accounting subscription monthly
• Monthly advertising
• Website hosting and domain name charged yearly
• Client gallery site subscription monthly
• Card machine charges (I have one on my studio i can take payments from)
• Trying to put money away for a pension
• 20% Tax is put away from every session
• Props and assesioies for studio
• Photography lighting and equipment
• Keeping our website and galleries up to date
• Writing blogs like this one takes time 😊 which we need to help our google rankings and SEO
• If you rent a studio for your newborn photography this is an extra large cost
• Also in the winter months your electricity bills go up a lot as you have to have your heater on throughout a newborn session to keep it warm enough for the baby
