When Is the Best Time to Book a Newborn Photographer in South East London?

One of the most common questions I’m asked by expectant parents is, “When should we book our newborn photos?” If you’re based in South East London or Bexley and expecting a baby, the short answer is: earlier than you might think.

Newborn photography is very different from other types of photoshoots. Because sessions take place during a short window after birth, timing plays a huge role in creating those soft, natural, relaxed images most parents are drawn to.

Why Booking a Newborn Photographer Early Matters

Newborn sessions usually take place within the first 7–14 days after your baby arrives. During this stage, babies are typically sleepier, curl naturally, and are more settled during the session.

Because this window is so small, newborn photographers can only take on a limited number of sessions each month. Booking early helps ensure:

  • You secure availability around your due date
  • You’re not trying to organise photos while recovering and adjusting
  • You can relax knowing everything is already planned

The Best Time During Pregnancy to Book Newborn Photos

The ideal time to book your newborn photographer is during your second or early third trimester, usually between 20–30 weeks pregnant.

Booking at this stage means:

  • You have time to plan without feeling rushed
  • Your photographer can reserve space in their diary
  • Your session is pencilled in around your estimated due date

Rather than booking a fixed date, most newborn photographers (myself included) work around your due date and adjust once your baby arrives.

What If My Baby Arrives Early or Late?

This is something parents often worry about — but don’t worry, flexibility is built into the booking process.

Once your baby arrives, you simply let me know within the first 48 hours, and we finalise your session date based on when you’re both feeling ready.

Because I only book a limited number of newborn sessions each month, there’s room to adjust dates while still keeping sessions calm and unrushed.

How My Newborn Booking Process Works

My newborn photography sessions are natural, relaxed, and focused on connection rather than rigid posing. When you book:

  1. We reserve space in my diary around your due date
  2. You receive simple guidance so you know exactly what to expect
  3. Once baby arrives, we confirm the session date
  4. You enjoy a calm, gentle experience tailored to your family

If you’re expecting a baby and considering newborn photography, I always recommend getting in touch sooner rather than later — even if you’re just gathering information.
